Burst Pipe: What to Do in the First 60 Seconds

A pipe bursts. Water is spreading. What you do in the first minute decides whether this is a pipe repair or a flooring and drywall job. Plumbers share this lesson on social media again and again because it works, and because most homeowners have never practised it before they need it.
1. Turn Off the Main Shutoff
Find it before you need it. It is usually near the meter, in a utility area, or at the front of the home. Turn it until water stops. If it will not turn, tell your plumber that first, it changes the triage.
2. Turn Off Power If Water Is Near Electrics
Use the breaker box, not a light switch, if water is near outlets, panels, or appliances. Water and electricity together are dangerous, and this step is the one most people forget.
3. Call Immediately, Not Tomorrow
Call (615) 583-1830 right away. Every minute of running water adds damage, and a plumber can talk you through shutoff and safety while on the way.
After the Water Stops
Move belongings off wet floors where safe, do not use electrical items in wet areas, and note where the burst happened and what the pipe looks like. Your plumber will check neighbouring joints and pressure, because a burst is sometimes a warning about the whole run.
