Sewer Smell in the House? Do Not Ignore It

A sewer smell is not just unpleasant. It can mean a dry trap, a vent problem, or a sewer line fault, and the fix depends on which one it is. A smell that comes and goes with wind or with fixture use is a clue, not a coincidence.
Check Traps First
A floor drain or a rarely used sink or shower can dry out, letting sewer gas through its trap. Running water into it for a minute can refill the trap and clear the smell, if that was the cause.
When It Persists
A persistent smell, a smell that gets worse when other fixtures drain, or a smell with slow drains or gurgling points to a vent or sewer line problem. That needs a camera and pressure check, not air freshener.
Health Note
Sewer gas in large amounts is a health concern. If the smell is strong, persistent, or accompanied by sewage backup, call a plumber promptly and ventilate the area.
